The VMO Society is dedicated to the artistic, personal and professional development of outstanding young musicians. Our goal is to create opportunities for talented young musicians to perform with the mentorship of seasoned professionals for live audiences; these are opportunities these young gifted musicians may not have otherwise had. We felt there was untapped potential in people caught between being professional musicians and music students. Many of these young musicians need a stepping-stone to embark on their professional musical career.

We perform music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. We also perform contemporary and popular music in special concerts with opera companies, choirs, and traditional folk music groups. Our choice of repertoire focuses on music that is commonly asked for in Orchestra Auditions.

VMO Debutes its 9th Season on a High Note

September 11th was significant to everyone for a number of reasons. The VMO chose to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 9-11 by connecting the community through music. A season is marked by new members in the orchestra, but one can hardly tell by the level of professionalism the group displayed during the performance. The concert featured the talents of 16-year old violin prodigy Esther Hwang who debuted with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the age of nine as well as soprano Shannon Chan-Kent, a classically-trained vocalist who is known in the local music community and has done voiceovers in a number of Hollywood animated films.

Under Maestro Ken Hsieh’s direction, Shannon and the orchestra dazzled the near sold-out crowd at the Michael J Fox Theatre with a collection of short arias while Esther’s rendition of Saint-Saen’s Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso inspired even the youngest fans in the audience. True to its community spirit, VMO paid tribute to the 10th anniversary of 9-11 with a repertoire composed by its composer-in-residence, Alain Maynard.

The concert concluded with Haydn’s Symphony 103 (also fondly known as “The Drumroll”). If the orchestra’s performance at its debut concert was any indication, the VMO is well on its way to making great strides this season.

UPCOMING: VMO Chamber Orchestra Concert – A Tribute to Louis Royce Liu

The VMO will be performing at the Magee Auditorium on the afternoon of November 13th. The concert will feature award winning piano soloist, Qiao Wang who began her career at the age of nine in Beijing. Since then, she has performed throughout the world including China, Hong Kong, Canada and Italy. Her Canadian debut concert was in at Vancouver Orpheum Theatre in 2006. In 2007, she was recognized by the classical music industry in China as one of the top ten music students in her age category in Beijing.

In addition, this concert will be held as a tribute to Louis Royce Liu, VMO’s Past Chairperson who passed away during his term last year. Mr. Liu was a music lover, supporter as well as a devoted friend of the VMO and we will be commemorating his commitment to the organization at this event.

Have you gotten your tickets yet? Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of classical music’s rising stars!

Tickets can be purchased online or in person at Tom Lee Music in Richmond and Midtown Business Center in Vancouver. For more information, please visit the VMO website at www.vmocanada.com.

Unveiling VMO’s New Facelift

We’ve enhanced our online presence as we’ve become more engaged with our audience via the web and social media. If you haven’t visited our website in a while, check out our new logo as well as a new look and feel at www.VMOCanada.com.

You’ll also find that we’ve streamlined our process for ticket purchases via our secure online payment system.
We’ve also consolidated our presence on Facebook, if you’ve liked us before, like us on our new Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/VMOCA.

Beyond VMO: Mentorship in the Community

Embracing the VMO’s commitment to mentorship, we have recently partnered with the Sauder School of Business. Our marketing and communications committee is working with a group of fourth year marketing students to examine how to be better engaged with VMO’s friends and supporters through traditional and social media. Because part of the group’s project requires feedback from our existing members, therefore, we need your help with a quick 5 minute survey found in the link here: http://vmocanada.com/vmo-online-survey

Your responses will remain anonymous and confidential. If you have any questions with regards to our involvement with UBC or with this survey specifically, please contact April Lemoine, VMO Marketing and Communications Committee Lead at?alemoine@vmocanada.com.
