Dear Friends of the VMO,

Greetings! The performing arts sector, despite the many challenges presented by Covid-19 since March 2020, continues to look optimistically towards the future. The VMO has not performed for a live audience in over 14 months, and we truly miss the thrill of being on stage before you!

With vaccinations under way, hopefully live events will soon return. Normally we would be wrapping up our season now and looking forward to our summer concert at Jack Poole Plaza. We anticipate next season, beginning September 2021, to be a year of transition from online to live concerts.

In trying times, music inspires, uplifts, and consoles both the artist as well as the listener; our devotion to it never wanes. To keep all our spirits strong, and for your viewing pleasure, VMO has recorded several concerts at the Orpheum Theatre and the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. These can be enjoyed from anywhere, both in private or even at a safe social distancing venue.

VMO recorded five concerts, one piano recital, and one education concert. Our string orchestra was the first concert at the Orpheum in October 2020; subsequent performances featured the woodwind section and then the brass ensemble. A memorial piano recital dedicated to our dear and long-time friend Donna Fishwick brought together some of her students under Wayne Weng. VMO’s education concert will now be shared with several schools, and we were honoured to record Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major with Vancouver Academy of Music CEO & President, Joseph Elworthy. The VMO Brass spring concert will be released online next week, and features a really fun repertoire.

We truly hope you will enjoy the music shared here with you, and continue to support our orchestra. May we take this opportunity to thank our most loyal fans, sponsors and donors who have been so generous as we navigate these difficult times. Your ongoing contributions have and will sustain us to keep going forward, step by musical step.
