The VMO opens its 18th season with works that are considered great masterpieces; however, seldomly performed. Vancouver’s own pianist, Rosa Hong joins the VMO in performing Rachmaninoff’s 1st Piano Concerto, a youthful energetic piece that was composed when the composer was just a mere 18 years old. After contracting tuberculosis, Kalinnikov, an accomplished conductor turned to composing, and composed two symphonies that are both considered great masterpieces.
The Orchestra will perform his 1st Symphony, a work that Maestro Hsieh has conducted on several occasions in Japan and China. The Orchestra will open the concert with a fanfare by local composer, Dan Reyes, a recent graduate of the composition faculty at Simon Fraser University.
